4-Day Tanzania Great Migration, Calving Season
Trip Information
This 4-day safari is designed for travellers who want to experience the Great Migration calving season in Tanzania. We travel from Arusha into the Serengeti and continue towards the Ndutu area, where the wildebeest gather in large numbers during the calving period.
The Ndutu plains are one of the most exciting places to be during this season. Thousands of wildebeest give birth across the open plains, attracting lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators. With our local knowledge and flexible game drives, we focus on finding the migration, newborn calves and the wildlife activity that follows the herds.
The safari ends with a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater before returning to Arusha.
🐾 Great Migration Calving Season
Follow the wildebeest herds around Ndutu and witness the incredible calving season, when thousands of newborn calves arrive on the plains.
🦁 Wildlife & Predator Action
The concentration of young animals attracts lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography.
🌋 Ngorongoro Crater
Descend into the famous Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive before continuing to Arusha, with time planned around your flight or hotel departure.
Day 1: Arusha to Serengeti National Park
We leave Arusha in the morning and begin the journey towards Serengeti National Park. The drive takes us through changing landscapes, from the highlands around Arusha towards the open plains of northern Tanzania.
As we approach Serengeti, the landscape becomes wider and more open, and wildlife sightings begin along the way. Depending on our arrival time, we can enjoy a game drive in the Serengeti before continuing to camp.
Tonight, we stay at Dove Serengeti Camp, where you can relax after the journey and prepare for the migration experience ahead.
Overnight: Dove Serengeti Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Central Serengeti to Ndutu – Following the Migration
After breakfast, we begin our journey from Central Serengeti towards the Ndutu area, following the seasonal movement of the Great Migration.
This is where the safari becomes especially focused on the calving season. As we approach Ndutu, the landscape changes into wide open plains where large herds of wildebeest and zebra can gather. We spend time on game drives looking for the migration, newborn calves and predators following the herds.
The timing and location of the animals can change from day to day, so we keep the day flexible and use our local knowledge to follow where the wildlife is most active.
Overnight: Kon Tiki Camp, Dove Migration Camp, or similar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Ndutu Calving Season – Wildlife & Newborn Calves
Today is the heart of your migration experience.
We spend the morning and early afternoon around the Ndutu plains, following the wildebeest herds and searching for newborn calves. During the calving season, you may see mothers giving birth, young calves taking their first steps and large herds moving across the plains.
The concentration of young animals also attracts predators. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators can be active around the migration, creating some of the most dramatic wildlife encounters of the season.
Later in the afternoon, we leave the Ndutu area and drive towards the Ngorongoro highlands. We climb towards the crater rim, where you can enjoy the cooler air and beautiful views over the surrounding landscape.
Overnight: Angata Ngorongoro Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater & Return to Arusha
We start the day early and descend about 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive.
The crater is home to a remarkable concentration of wildlife. We search the crater floor for lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos and, with some luck, the endangered black rhino. The morning light is also excellent for photography and wildlife viewing.
After the crater experience, we begin the drive back to Arusha. Depending on your onward flight or travel plans, we can arrange a suitable drop-off at Arusha Airport, Kilimanjaro International Airport, or your hotel in Arusha.
Your 4-day Great Migration calving safari ends with memories of the Serengeti, newborn wildebeest, and the incredible wildlife of northern Tanzania.
